York UK - an alternative view

August 08, 2014

You’ll see in one of the galleries here http://richardhiston.zenfolio.com/p877494621 another view of the great city of York UK. York centre is a superb place, with something for everyone. Whether you want to visit the many historic buildings with their Roman or Viking history, or you want to come and get blotto by 7pm, collapse and crawl in the street while being sick on the pavements – York has it all.

A person goes round the streets next morning with his scrubbing machine but it never quite gets the stains out of the pavements. I might make my next photo project “The aftermath – York centre pavements…”

Also see the strange image on the Press website of council officials and the police “Joint fight against beggars in York”. http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/news/11334266.Joint_fight_against_beggars_in_York/

Here are my photos from around York city centre when the city hosted the opening of the second stage of the Tour de France in 2014 http://richardhiston.zenfolio.com/p877494621 Begging can arouse many different reactions from onlookers, ranging from pity to outrage. No doubt some beggars are doing it for the wrong reasons, and some are alcoholics, drug addicts, or both.

Nevertheless, for this to happen in our affluent age, for whatever reason, is surely wrong. The York Arc Light are doing all they can to help homeless men and women, and the council have a strategy for helping people in this predicament.

York Council are in charge of our City – is it not about time they took ownership and sorted all of this out?
